Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin talked about the crash that Chris Froome suffered at the recon of the individual time trial in the Criterium du Dauphine.
Froome was hit by strong wind while he was riding at around 60 kilometres per hour at the course of the time trial of the French race. This caused a heavy crash that had as consequence several fractures, including one in the femur, one in the elbow and some broken ribs.
"It is terrible for him and for cycling in general," said Dumoulin to Dutch broadcaster NOS. The rider knows where the accident took place without being told because he had already foreseen the risks of the spot. "Every now and then the wind came through the houses. I told my team leader: let me think about it for a moment, I think Froome crashed there."
The Dutchman finished in the third position of the time trial, at 47 seconds of the day's winner Wout van Aert. "There is always something inside me that hopes for more so I will always be disappointed, even if this was to be expected," explained Dumoulin.
"For now, if you look at today with reason it was an okay performance but the winner in me doesn’t like it. I would like to be race ready here and winning ready but I’m not. I know why and I know that I shouldn’t be expecting more but it is what it is."
