Jumbo-Visma's Wout van Aert has taken his second stage victory in a row at the Criterium du Dauphine. The Belgian was the fastest at the final sprint and crossed the finish line ahead of Sam Bennett and Julian Alaphilippe.
The fifth stage of the French race was over a 201-kilometre route that was perfect for the fast men to fight for the victory. In the first ten kilometres, Yoann Bagot (Vital Concept), Stephane Rossetto (Cofidis) and Alessandro De Marchi (CCC) formed the breakaway of the day.
The escape got an advantage of more than three minutes over the peloton, which was pulled by teams like Deceuninck-Quick-Step, Bora-hansgrohe, Trek-Segafredo and Mitchelton-Scott. The leading trio entered the last ten kilometres of the stage with an advantage of more than 35 seconds, which made it believe for a moment that it would make it.
With two kilometres to go, De Marchi tried his luck and launched an attack but he was reeled back in just before the Flamme Rouge. Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) and Philippe Gilbert (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) tried to break free in the last kilometre but the peloton's speed didn't let that happen.
The winner of the fourth stage of the race, Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) was the first rider to cross the finish line beating Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick-Step). Mitchelton-Scott's Adam Yates crossed the finish line with the pack and retained the Yellow Jersey.
