The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has found Juan Jose Cobo guilty of an anti-doping rule violation. The rider will be stripped of his Vuelta a España title of 2011.

Cobo won the 2011 edition of the Spanish grand tour by 13 seconds over Team Sky's Chris Froome. The Spaniard took the red jersey on the 15th stage of the race -after winning the Angliru stage- and wore it all the way to the end of the competition in Madrid.

"The Anti-Doping Tribunal found the retired rider guilty of an anti-doping rule violation (Use of a prohibited substance) based on abnormalities from 2009 and 2011 detected in his Biological Passport* and imposed a three-year period of ineligibility on the rider," said the UCI in a statement.

Spanish media report that the UCI has already notified Unipublic -who organises the Vuelta a España- that the rider will be stripped of his title and then it would go to Chris Froome. This would be the second title in the Spanish race for the rider and it would add one more grand tour title to the six he already has.
