Bora-hansgrohe's Peter Sagan has sprinted to victory in the third stage of the Tour de Suisse. The rider also climbed to the top of the general classification.

The escape of the day was formed by four riders: Bert-Jan Lindemann, Willem Smit, Ryan Anderson and Simon Pellaud. The front group got a gap of more than four minutes with the peloton, which was pulled mainly by Bora-hansgrohe.

The last of the escapees was caught close to the three-kilometre mark by a pack that was already organising itself to tackle a fast finish. Peter Sagan was perfectly positioned by his teammates and started his sprint early but it was so strong that nobody could match it, taking as such not only the day's victory but also the leaders' jersey.

Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Elia Viviani and Trek-Segafredo's John Degenkolb crossed the finish line just behind the Slovak champion. Ivan Garcia Cortina (Bahrain Merida) and Ben Swift (Ineos) completed the top five of the day.

"I'm happy with this stage win, my 17th at the Tour de Suisse, and the leader's yellow jersey," Sagan explained. "I'd like to thank the whole team for their brilliant work, they controlled the race and placed me in a perfect spot for the victory. It was a very fast finale and quite hectic because everybody wanted to be in the front.

"When we crossed the finish line for the first time, it was clear to me that in order to have a chance at winning, I had to be in the first positions of the group before the last left turn. That's what we did and I was able to attack in the final stretch to get the victory."
