Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) has sprinted to victory in the fourth stage of the Tour de Suisse. The rider was the fastest at the final sprint on a day in which Geraint Thomas crashed out of the race.
The fourth stage of the Swiss race was 163.9 kilometres long between Murten and Arleeshein over a route that included a second category climb and an ascent of the third category. The breakaway was formed by four riders: Taco van der Hoorn, Robin Carpenter, Simon Geschke and Gian Friesecke, and it built an advantage of more than three minutes over the pack.
With around 32 kilometres to go, Ineos' Geraint Thomas hit the deck along with Omar Fraile and Andrey Zeits (Astana). The escapees were caught with seven kilometres to go and the stage was sentenced to a bunch sprint.
Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Elia Viviani was the fastest man in the final sprint in one of his last days wearing the Italian colours. He was followed by Michael Matthews (Sunweb), Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe), Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) and Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo).
Sagan remains at the top of the General Classification.
