Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) has taken his second victory in the Tour de Suisse. The rider outsprinted Peter Sagan and Jasper Stuyven in the bunch sprint of the fifth stage of the race.

The riders faced a 177-kilometre stage over a route that featured a second category climb and one of the third category, in the fifth day of competition in Switzerland. Initially four riders formed the escape group of the day but in the end, only three could keep up with the speed: Stefan Küng, Matej Mohoric and Fabien Grellier.

The breakaway built a gap of a bit more than two minutes with a peloton that was pulled by Bora-hansgrohe, which was working hard for the race leader Peter Sagan. Halfway on the second category climb, Küng and Grellier were dropped by Mohoric, who at the end was reeled back in by the pack close to the ten-kilometre mark.

The stage came down to a bunch sprint in which once again Elia Viviani (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) showed to have the better legs. Sagan crossed the finish line in the second position -which let him retain the lead of the overall classification- and Trek-Segafredo's Jasper Stuyven finished in the third place.

The sixth stage of the race will take the peloton between Einsiedeln and Flumserberg over a 120.2-kilometre route that will have a finish on a first category climb.
