Bora-hansgrohe's Pascal Ackermann has taken the victory of the first stage of the Tour of Slovenia. The German beat Giacomo Nizzolo and Simoni Consonni to take the day's win.

The opening stage of the Slovenian race was 168.5-kilometres long between Ljubljana and Rogaska Slatina and three riders made an early escape. On the descent of the last categorised climb, a chasing group was formed and was able to catch the front men but with 15 kilometres to go, all of them were caught by the peloton.

After that, the teams with sprinters prepared for a fast finale and Bora-hansgrohe positioned Pascal Ackermann ahead of the final kilometre. The German national champion started his sprint with 500 metres to go and Dimension Data's Giacomo Nizzolo and UAE-Team Emirates' Simone Consonni tried to unsuccessfully outsprint him and had to settle with the second and third positions of the day.

Ackermann also took the lead of the General Classification. "That was a long sprint if I say so myself!" he commented after the finish line. "I started with 500m to go because Mezgec was coming from behind at a fast pace, so I had to go long. I'm just happy that I was able to get to the line first. I think that I was able to recover pretty well following the Giro, and my success at my first Grand Tour really provided that extra bit of motivation.

"I also managed to get myself over the climbs well and it was even enjoyable out there. Because we had Schwarzi in the breakaway, we were able to go somewhat easier in the peloton. But the team rode the whole time at the front of the peloton in order to control the tempo. I'm really happy with the performance of the guys and want to thank them for their hard work."
