Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin has taken the decision of skipping the Tour de France. He doesn't think he would be physically fit to face the French grand tour.

Dumoulin crashed out of the Giro d'Italia and since then he has been trying to return to shape and to recover completely of his knee. After undergoing a small surgery to remove a shred of gravel from his knee he was set to start altitude training ahead of the Grande Boucle but he has decided it is better to take time to recover completely from all this episode.

"The last month has been extremely difficult overall, and with the setbacks in the knee recovery," he explained. "After what happened at the Giro I really wanted to go for it in the Tour, but this week I realised it’s just not realistic for my level to be there on time. I’ve tried so hard to get there but I really have to listen to my body and release myself from chasing an unrealistic goal.

The rider came to this conclusion on the way to the altitude training trip. "I have ten stitches in my knee," explained Dumoulin to Dutch broadcaster NOS. "Actually, I didn't take the time to process everything. Without thinking, I did everything to go to the Tour. When I was in the car I started thinking and then I realised that this is not happening anymore.

"It felt like a relief. I have not regretted it for a moment. I just can't make it anymore, I have a wound in my knee. Since my fall in the Giro, I have been in a rehabilitation process and not in a process to win the Tour in good shape."
