The Tour of Slovenia had a different leader at the end of the third stage as Diego Ullissi attacked just before the last descent of the day and took the stage victory and the GC lead.

The stage of the day had two categorised climbs over its 170 kilometres of lenght, but as it was expected, the movements came on the last two, Medvedje Brdo and Dole. The escape of the day was reeled back in at the last climb of the day and soon after a new front group was formed by Aleksandr Vlasov, Diego Ulissi, Esteban Chaves and Tadej Pogacar.

The four of them arrived together to the final stretch of the climb and after a short talk with his UAE-Team Emirates' teammate, Ulissi attacked and only Vlasov could follow him but the Italian was stronger and he took the victory of the stage. He also climbed three positions to the top of the overall classification.

"I'm really happy with this win because the condition was there and I showed it in the past few days," said Ulissi. "I wanted to win and I got it. I've ridden with a lot of determination in these first three stages. My escape companion Vlasov was also very strong. Then in the final the group behind were approaching and, having seen that the Russian was a little tired, I tried to go away by myself. It went well.

"Poga?ar and I talked to each other on the climb, I felt good so we decided that I'd make the move and he'd block in the group behind. Now I'm in the lead and we will do everything to try to keep it, even if the efforts of the Giro d'Italia are starting to be felt a bit."
