Yves Lampaert completed the Individual Time Trial of the Tour of Suisse in 21 minutes and 58 seconds, taking his first WorldTour victory in the discipline of his career.
The Belgian national champion -and ITT champion of 2017- completed the course before the favourites went down the ramp. The rider set the best time of the race and had to wait on the hot seat until the GC riders completed the route of the penultimate stage of the race.
"I didn't expect it, because before the start I thought I didn't have the best feelings, but I just gave it my all and rode full gas," said Lampaert at the end of the stage. "To beat so many riders, so many specialists of the discipline, including the World Champion, it's just incredible and feeds my confidence ahead of next week's Nationals.
"It's my first World Tour ITT win and it's just crazy. I'm surprised, but at the same time, so, so happy."
