Bahrain-Merida has announced the creation of the Bahrain Cycling Academy that will have several targets for the upcoming years.

The team will work with the Bahrain Cycling Association and McLaren to establish the academy with the objective of creating a development path for "promising Bahraini and regional cyclists," it explained in a statement. For 2020, the academy will have a Continental team that will race in the UCI Asia Tour and will have its hub in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The long-term target of the academy is to "establish Bahrain as a regional talent pool for elite cyclists, and ultimately to have a Bahraini cyclist join Bahrain’s UCI World Tour team. Bringing cycling to Bahrain means more than just having a top-level team in the Kingdom, it means developing a community that supports the team, and a team that supports the local community.

"We will work on improving Bahrain’s cycling infrastructure, educating motorists to safely share our roads with cyclists, and be a driving force for growing cycling as both a competitive sport and a contributor to a healthy lifestyle."

This project also wants to take a step in a very important matter in cycling. "The popularity of women’s cycling is also on the rise, and the Academy will proudly support female riders in Bahrain, promoting organized cycling and women’s coaching clinics," expressed the statement.

"The goal is, by 2025, to achieve equal participation in cycling between men and women in Bahrain, and to create an elite UCI Women’s WorldTour team. The home of the Academy will be the imposing McLaren building at Sakhir’s Bahrain International Circuit complex – the perfect location for inspiring speed and performance."
