Astana's Jakob Fuglsang starts the Tour de France as one of the favourites to take the final victory after a good first half of the season.

Earlier in the year, the Dane took the overall victory of the Criterium du Dauphine after winning Liege-Bastogne-Liege and finishing in podium positions in races like the Amstel Gold Race, Tirreno-Adriatico and Strade Bianche. Just before heading to the French grand tour, the rider went to do altitude training at the Isola 2000 and at the three alpine stages of the race.

"They look very hard but they might not create differences as big as on paper”, he commented. "Riders who aim for the yellow jersey will have to be close on GC and we have to see the influence of the bonus seconds. Theses bonus sprints can be decisive on GC. It looks more open without Chris Froome who is a very good road captain by the way he guides his team-mates but let’s not forget that Ineos is still the strongest team and they have the defending champion (Geraint Thomas).

"I still believe they’re the favourites. My goal is to try to arrive on the podium. As long as I make the top 5, it’ll be fine and the dream is to win the Tour. The yellow jersey is the symbol of the leader in cycling. It’s not pink, it’s not red. Everyone knows that the rider in yellow is the leader."
