Jakob Fuglsang suffered a crash just after the 20-kilometre mark but he has injuries that allow him to continue on the race. The rider of Astana had to receive medical attention as soon as the stage finished.

The Dane is one of the favourites to take the title of the 2019 Tour de France, but he started the race with the wrong foot. He was involved in a crash in the last part of the opening stage and could be seen in television with several abrasions and blood pouring down his face.

Several of his teammates waited for Fugslang and returned him safely to the peloton just before facing the last 10 kilometres of the stage, and just after the finish line, he got checked by the medical team. He needed four stitches in a cut above his eye and has abrasions on the knee, shoulder and elbow, and although the radiography didn't show any fractures, an echo showed muscle contusions around his knee.

"A rider crashed in front of me at the moment we were going to the front of the peloton to stay out of trouble, it was impossible to avoid him and so I crashed," said the Dane after the medical check. "It’s not the way you want to start the Tour. I’m happy that there were no fractures, so I’m able to continue the race. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow."
