Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) finished in the third position of the fifth stage in the Tour de France. The European champion crossed the finish line just behind of Peter Sagan and Wout van Aert.
Trentin remained with the peloton throughout the challenging course of the fifth stage of the French grand tour. His teammate Daryl Impey did an impeccable work in the last kilometre of the day and left Trentin in an ideal position, but Sagan's sprint was so strong that he ha to settle with the third place.
"Yeah for sure it was a hard stage for the pure sprinters, like the guys who were at the front yesterday, it was always going to be tough for them today," the Italian rider commented. "It was a good pace, we knew that and in the end, it came down to a sprint between the sprinters who can climb. If you see the top five, it was kind of expected that these guys would be at the front."
"I have to say that Daryl was perfect today, he brought me into the perfect position around the roundabout, but Sagan was just quicker. Sagan was on my wheel, so I think he anticipated my kick and that was enough, then Van Aert came from behind and it was a matter of centimetres for second."
