Tour de France

The fifth stage of the 2019 Tour de France had some action over a rolling course suitable for the Classic riders and finished with the victory of Peter Sagan. Julian Alaphilippe, Toms Skujins, Tim Wellens, and Edvald Boasson Hagen -who had to change bikes on the last climb- shared their thoughts after the finish line.

Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick-Step, wearer of the Yellow Jersey)

"The spirit within my team has always been special. We always fight together to get the victory. Yesterday I was happy to work for Elia Viviani, and today they all did their best for me. It was a nice stage although everyone is looking forward to tomorrow. Why not keeping the yellow jersey... I melt like ice under the sun but every day I spend in yellow is a bonus for me. Tomorrow I’ll have to suffer even more than usual."

Toms Skujins (Trek-Segafredo, Combativity award of the stage)

"Today even though I was at the front the whole day, it was easier than the first day of the Tour de France. Tim Wellens was asking for letting him take the KOM points. To give the breakaway the best chance, I couldn’t say no. Eventually, it was beneficial for all of us. I felt I was the strongest in the break. I knew the peloton was coming close and it was demanding to go on the attack again, but I wanted to see what I could do, although my legs were pretty empty. In the last climb, I didn’t have anything left."

Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal, wearer of the Polka Dot jersey)

"Today I needed a bit of luck to get into the breakaway. The peloton never let us go. Every time I attacked, it is for the stage victory. But today I realized pretty quickly that we wouldn’t make it, so I focused on the KOM points and I succeeded. Every day in the polka dot jersey is a nice one. I’ve had the best climber’s jersey at the Giro but it felt like normal. At the Tour, it’s always special. But my legs weren’t great today. So I believe I need a day off tomorrow and I hope it’ll be the turn of Thomas De Gendt. He hasn’t been very lucky so far in catching the breakaways but I hope it’ll be his day of glory tomorrow and I’ll save some energy for what will be next."

Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data)

"I had to spend some energy there, but I managed to get back. I didn't have too much left to sprint with but it's nice to have at least finished with this group. We had Roman and Michael in the front but it was better they stayed there, the final was hectic and technical in the convoy and it wasn't sure I could even make it back. I didn't end with a good result but at least it shows I can be there, and we will try again when there are more climbs like this."
