Boels-Dolmans' Anna van der Breggen has taken a solo victory in the ninth stage of the Giro Rosa. The World Champion crossed the finish line 17 seconds ahead of Annemiek van Vleuten and Ashleigh Moolman Pasio.

The penultimate stage of the Italian grand tour was 125.5 kilometres long between Gemona and Chiusaforte/Malga Montasio over a route that featured a climbing finish. The ninth day of competition started with the escape of seven riders, which arrived to the bottom of the final climb with an advantage of one minute and 30 seconds.

But the speed of the peloton led by Mitchelton-Scott managed to catch the breakaway before the 10-kilometre mark. By that moment only five riders were riding in front: Annemiek van Vleuten, Amanda Spratt (Mitchelton-Scott), Anna van der Breggen (Boels-Dolmans), Lucinda Brand (Sunweb) and Ashleigh Moolman Pasio (CCC-Liv).

The first rider to drop was Brand and soon Van Vleuten launched an attack that Van der Breggen could not only neutralise but also beat, arriving to the finish line 17 seconds ahead of her fellow countrywoman. Moolman Pasio crossed the finish line in the third place, Spratt in the fourth and Katie Hall arrived in the fifth place.

"It's amazing to win here," said Van der Bregger. "I tried to keep a regular pace on the climb and not to chase Annemiek, but when I saw her in trouble I thought that I could win the stage so I gave my best. I arrived to win my third Giro, but the second place and the stage win today make me really happy."
