The ninth stage of the Tour de France was not only about the celebration of France's National Day but also about Romain Bardet. The race went through the roads of the rider's home region.

The roads of the ninth stage of the race were lined with pieces of art dedicated to Bardet and with people that know him or wanted to encourage him. He used this energy and inspiration to make a move on the last climb of the day and although he didn't make a big difference and was reeled back in, he could show that he can surprise the peloton.

"It was very emotional because we rode on my home roads and there were lots of people that I know very well watching by the road," said the rider to the journalists at the end of the stage. "It is time for me to kickstart, I hope so. I have big hopes for the second and third week and it could only get better".

The rider was touched by all the attention he received today. "Of course it gives me a smile," he commented. "We need that -when it's not going well, to go back to the roots and that's all I needed in this stage in Auvergne. When we take a slap we have two solutions: either to put the other cheek or to give back the one we have just taken. I did not choose the first option. I must seize the chances as they come, I knew the roads well and I found myself facing the wind with Richie (Porte).

"But above all, the attitude of today is how I want to approach the second part of the Tour. The start was not good but I'm determined to fight and my team too. We will attack in the high mountains next week and we hope to play a leading role. The sensations have returned and I think they will go in crescendo. I appreciate the format of the Grand Tour and I hope to be stronger in the third week as never before."
