Jumbo-Visma's Wout van Aert has taken his first stage victory in a grand tour in the Tour de France. The rider beat Elia Viviani and Caleb Ewan at the end of an eventful stage.

Van Aert had already finished in the second position in the fifth stage of the race and in the tenth stage he had the chance of fighting for the sprint as his teammate Dylan Groenewegen was left behind during the crosswinds that broke the peloton. The former cyclocross World Champion protected Steve Kruijswijk at the last part of the stage and was able to fight for the victory and win it.

"I can't believe that I beat all those fast guys in a sprint," an emotional van Aert explained. "I just can't believe it. This is above anything else. I've felt in these last days how big this race and winning here in my first attempt is just wow.

"The stage became quite nervous in the final and I managed to stay in front and keep our leader Stevie (Kruijswijk) in position. Unfortunately, Dylan was not in the first group and then I was allowed to try and go for the sprint. From the last sprint, I learned that I have to go quite early, so I went at 250 metres from the finish. It was close with Viviani but I won it. Only one centimetre is enough."
