Julian Alaphilippe managed to stay another day at the top of the General Classification of the Tour de France. The rider and his team Deceuninck-Quick-Step did a remarkable job in the crosswinds and profited from it as much as possible.
With 30 kilometres to go and as the crosswinds started to be felt in the peloton, Alaphilippe commanded a change of speed that caused several breaks in the peloton. Although Elia Viviani finished in the second position of the final sprint, the team managed to cross the line with many of its members, including the Frenchman -who kept the Yellow Jersey- and Enric Mas -who climbed five positions in GC.
"The crosswinds made everything really nervous, but we knew we had to stay alert and did a great job together," said the Frenchman. "The entire team was at the front and went full gas to try to win the stage with Elia. We didn’t take the victory, but we rode like a great squad today and we can be proud of that.
"On the other hand, I kept my lead in the classification and Enric moved up several places, so we can be pretty satisfied with the outcome. It was an interesting, action-packed stage, but now I’m glad we’ll finally have a rest day."
