Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) was the fastest of the three-man final sprint of the 12th stage of the Tour de France. This is the first win of the Briton in the French race.

The race arrived to the Pyrenees with a 209.5-kilometre stage between Toulouse and Bagneres-de-Bigorre over a route that featured two climbs of the first category: the Col de Peyresourde -famous for Chris Froome's daring descent in 2016- and the Hourquette d'Ancizan. The first kilometres of the race were very active with several attacks by riders like Rohan Dennis, Greg Van Avermaet, Joey Rosskopf and Peter Sagan, among others.

The peloton repelled each of the attacks until a group of around 40 riders managed to break free and got a gap of more than six minutes with the pack. The difficulty of the climbs slimmed down the front group and the peloton and just after crossing the Col de Peyresourde, EF Education First's Simon Clarke attacked and got a good gap with the others.

At the last climb of the day -which also gave away some bonus seconds, riders like Matteo Trentin, Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) and Gregor Mühlberger (Bora-hansgrohe) got to the front until only the Briton and the Austrian remained in front closely followed by Pello Bilbao (Astana), who some kilometres later joined the duo.

The three men fought for the final victory of the stage and Yates was the fastest, taking his first win in La Grande Boucle and becoming one of the riders with victories in all three of the grand tours.

The peloton crossed the finish line more than nine minutes behind the winner of the stage and Julian Alaphilippe maintains the lead of the General Classification for another day.
