Julian Alaphilippe has retained the lead of the General Classification after the 12th stage of the Tour de France. The rider will have the honour of wearing the Yellow Jersey in its 100th anniversary.

The 12th stage of the French grand tour was calmer than expected despite being the first day in the Pyrenees. The stage was won by Simon Yates and the peloton arrived to the finish line more than nine minutes later, with Julian Alaphilippe who managed to keep the Yellow Jersey for one more day.

The Frenchman will get to wear the leader's jersey in the 13th stage of La Grande Boucle, on the date of the 100th anniversary of its introduction in the race. "It’s historic to wear the yellow jersey on its 100th anniversary and on Friday it will be a very special moment for me," said Alaphilippe.

"As a Frenchman, to sport the Maillot Jaune in an individual time trial will be one of the most beautiful moments of my entire career. Having the yellow jersey tomorrow motivates me to hurt myself even more than usual and you can be sure that I will push my limits while enjoying every single minute of it."
