The crash of Wout van Aert in the 13th stage of the Tour de France has finished the road season of the rider. He will have to wait a couple of months to see how his calendar continues.

Van Aert crashed at the individual time trial of the French grand tour and suffered a deep cut on the hip that had to be fixed with surgery. "He is doing reasonably well under the circumstances," said Jumbo-Visma's sports director Nico Verhoeven to Belgian broadcaster Sporza. "His family is with him, which makes it a little more bearable. The hardest part will be when we all leave and he is left alone behind.

Verhoeven confirmed that the road season of the rider is over. "It is still uncertain when he can start his cyclocross season," he commented. "Although we are not focusing on that at the moment. Let us hope that he recovers at 100%"

"The surgeon talked about a two month rehabilitation period in which he will not be allowed to cycle. But Wout thinks differently. A cyclist normally recovers faster."
