Astana's Jakob Fuglsang has withdrawn from the Tour de France. The rider suffered a late crash in the 16th stage of the race that forced him out of the competition.

The leader of Astana for the French grand tour crashed in a curve with around 26 kilometres to go and although at first didn't look too bad, the rider took the decision of stepping out of the race. Television images showed the rider taking his helmet off and talking to his team's staff and race doctors.

With some of his teammates around him, he seemed to take the decision of finishing his adventure in the race just after shaking the hand of Alexey Lutsenko. The rider was five minutes and 27 seconds behind Julian Alaphilippe in the General Classification.

This Tour de France hasn't been good for the rider, as he started it crashing in the first stage, which left him with four stitches, abrasions and knee contusions. Later in the race, he was caught in the wrong group during the crosswinds of the tenth stage that almost finished his overall aspirations.

Although he was able to avoid too many time losses in the mountain stages, the crash of the 16th stage put a finish to the race for Fuglsang. The rider was one of the main candidates to win the race before the start because of his good season so far, which included victories in the Ruta del Sol, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Criterium du Dauphine.
