Lotto-Soudal's Caleb Ewan has won his second final sprint in the 2019 Tour de France at the 16th stage of the race. The Australian crossed the finish line ahead of Elia Viviani and Dylan Groenewegen.

The first stage of the last week of the French grand tour was 177 kilometres long over a rolling course with the potential of finishing in a bunch sprint. The breakaway of the day was formed early in the stage by Lukas Wisnowski (CCC Team), Lars Bak (Dimension Data), Paul Orselin (Total Direct Energie), Alexis Gougeard (AG2R La Mondiale) and Stephane Rossetto (Cofidis).

With more than 100 kilometres to go, Team Ineos' Geraint Thomas crashed but without serious consequences and it took him some kilometres to return to the pack. The escape group couldn't get a bigger gap than one minute and a half.

With around 26 kilometres to go, Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) crashed in a curve and had to step out of the race. The peloton kept riding together until it caught the escapees with two kilometres to go, after which the sprint trains took over to prepare for the final moments of the race.

Deceuninck-Quick-Step once again did a good job for Elia Viviani but in the last metres, Caleb Ewan launched a very strong sprint that couldn't be beaten by the competitors. Viviani was in second place and Jumbo-Visma's Dylan Groenewegen finished in the third position.

Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) arrived to the finish with the pack and kept the lead of the General Classification for another stage.
