Lotto Soudal's Caleb Ewan was the fastest man at the final sprint of the 16th stage in the Tour de France. This is the second stage victory for the Australian in the French race.

Ewan started sprinting from the back and he was so strong that none of the rivals could beat his speed. The Australian crossed the finish line ahead of Elia Viviani and Dylan Groenewegen on a day that proved to be challenging due to the heat.

"To be honest, I felt so bad today during the day," said the rider of Lotto Soudal at the finish line. "I think the heat really got to me and I was actually suffering and I was actually about to tell Max (Maxime Monfort) to get off the front because I was really suffering. I had the extra motivation today because my daughter and my wife are here so I'm so happy I could win today.

"I had Jasper in the front and Dylan in the wheel, so we weren't in an ideal situation with one k to go but he did such a strong pull. Quick-Step came pass and I lost a few more positions that I wanted to but I looked at this finish actually this other day and I played all the scenarios in my head and one of them was that I was too far back. I started sprinting before the rest of the guys and it worked."
