Matteo Trentin has taken his third stage victory in the Tour de France. The Italian was part of the breakaway of the day and crossed the finish line of the 17th stage by himself.

The 200-kilometre stage took the riders from Pont du Gard and Gap over a rolling route. A group of 33 men formed the escape of the day and included riders like Greg Van Avermaet, Matteo Trentin, Daniel Oss, Rui Costa, Bauke Mollema and Magnus Cort Nielsen.

The escape got a gap of more than 20 minutes with the pack. With around 30 kilometres to go, only eleven riders remained in front and at 13 kilometres from the finish and at the last climb of the day, Trentin made a strong move and soon created a big gap with the rest.

Trentin crossed the finish line by himself, taking the fourth stage victory for Mitchelton Scott. Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) finished the stage 37 seconds behind the winner and the group of Van Avermaet, Mollema, Dylan Teuns and Gorka Izagirre did so at 41 seconds.

The peloton crossed the finish line more than 20 minutes after Trentin and Julian Alaphilippe kept the lead of the General Classification.
