Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Kasper Asgreen has crossed the finish line in the second position at the 17th stage of the Tour de France.

The 24-year-old was part of the 33-man breakaway that was formed early on the stage. The Dane followed each of the important moves of the group, including the formation of the small group in front at the last stretch of the stage, but couldn't follow Matteo Trentin in the last climb and had to settle with the second position, his first podium position in a grand tour in his career.

"I am really happy with the confidence the team gave me today," said Asgreen at the end of the stage. "I felt pretty good and had a fun day in the break. On the Sentinelle, I decided to make my move inside the last kilometre, but at this point in the race, there wasn’t too much power left in the legs, which made the gap really difficult to shut down.

"Second is a nice result, my first Grand Tour stage top 3, and I hope to keep it up in the last days of the Tour, which has been really great for us."
