Team Ineos' Geraint Thomas dropped one position in the General Classification after the 18th stage of the Tour de France.
The winner of the 2018 edition of the race tried a move in the favourites' group moments after his teammate Egan Bernal took off. The Welshman was then caught by the rest of the GC contenders just after the finish of the climb and all of them arrived together to the finish line, five minutes and 18 seconds behind the stage winner Nairo Quintana.
As Bernal climbed three positions in the overall standings, Thomas dropped one and now he sits in the third position, one minute and 25 seconds behind the holder of the Yellow Jersey, Julian Alaphilippe. "There was a high pace and it didn't seem quite hard, we ran out of guys so the call was made for Egan to go and hopefully that might kick it off a bit," explained the Briton after the finish line. "The other guys were just riding in tempo again. I had a little dig just to see what would happen and they followed be over the top. It was a good day because Egan won some time.
"There are two big days to come. We knew it would be hard to do anything today but it was a big day and there are two more big days to come."
