Jumbo-Visma's Steven Kruijswijk finished the 18th stage of the Tour de France with most of the favourites, except Egan Bernal who took advantage over the rest.

The leader of Jumbo-Visma survived the first Alpine stage by staying with the rest of the favourites throughout the entire day. Team Ineos' Egan Bernal launched an attack in the last climb that none of the favourites followed and that made him climb three spots in the overall classification, which also made Kruisjwijk drop one position from the third to the fourth place.

"I got through the day well," Kruijswijk commented. "In the descent of the Galibier, it was all hands on deck for a while. When Alaphilippe returned, it was important to limit the damage to Bernal. I also did not want to take too many risks.

"The fact that it started to rain in the end, was not ideal. It was a gruelling day with those three long climbs. Nobody dared to go early, because they were afraid to pay the price. Although I didn’t feel great, I survived the stage."
