Thibaut Pinot of Groupama-FDJ has abandoned the Tour de France. The rider appeared to suffer from pain in his left leg and was later seen in tears as he got into a team car.

Pinot, fifth in the general classification of the Tour ahead of the penultimate mountain stage, required medical assistance early in the stage.

This delay caused a significant time gap and eventually resulted in the rider's decision to leave the race.

Pinot had shown good form in recent stages and was by many seen as a key candidate to finish on the podium of this year's Tour de France.

This was the 29-year-old's seventh Tour de France. In three of the previous editions he made it to Paris. The Frenchman's best Tour de France result to date was a third place in the 2014 edition, behind Vincenzo Nibali and Jean-Christophe Peraud.
