AG2R La Mondiale's Romain Bardet has successfully defended the Polka Dot jersey at the 20th stage of the Tour de France.

The Frenchman crossed the finish line at three minutes and 45 seconds from the stage's winner Vincenzo Nibali, and nobody put at risk his lead of the Mountain classification. When he steps on the podium in Paris, Bardet will be for the fifth time on it, after winning the team classification in 2014, taking the most aggressive rider award in 2015 and finishing in the overall second and third place respectively in 2016 and 2017.

"I'm happy to stand tomorrow on the Champs Elysees podium with this best climber's jersey," said the rider at the end of the penultimate stage. "I worked really hard, and I'm proud I never gave up. Success has been escaping me since the beginning of the season, but thanks to my team, I kept the faith.

"It is a great satisfaction for everyone. In life, sometimes it takes a bit of luck, and today mine was kind of a 'goal off the post'. Nevertheless, for this Tour, I spared no effort, I tried to get in the breakaways, even if it did not always work. But this is a great satisfaction."
