Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) has outsprinted the competition at the opening stage of the Tour de Pologne.

The 76th edition of the Tour de Pologne opened with a 132-kilometre long stage with a start and finish in Krakow. Adrian Kurek, Jakub Kaczmarek (Poland) and Charles Planet (Novo Nordisk) formed the breakaway of the day and they were reeled back in at the start of first of the three laps of the finishing city circuit of the stage.

Bora-hansgrohe was controlling the peloton throughout most of the stage for Pascal Ackermann and at the last kilometre did a perfect job which allowed the German to take the win of the first day of competition. Fernando Gaviria (UAE-Team Emirates) and Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) completed the top three of the stage.

"I knew the stage from last year, therefore I told my lead-out man Rudi that he should stay calm until the final metres and it worked out perfectly," said Ackermann. "The whole team did a stellar job today, Bodi was at the front of the peloton for nearly the whole stage, setting the pace.

"Then Cesare, Rafal, Pawel and Davide brought me into position and last but not least Rudi, who did an amazing lead-out again. I am super happy with my third win here in Poland, the spectators are incredible and it makes so much fun to ride here, of course, I want to try to win tomorrow again, especially in the leader's jersey."

The rider of Bora-hansgrohe also took the lead of the General Classification with his victory.
