Cofidis' Luis Angel Mate suffered a serious crash at the first stage of the Tour de Pologne which left him with more than 50 stitches in the head.

The Spaniard hit the deck in the same incident as his teammate Filippo Fortin and at 20 kilometres from the finish line in Krakow. The rider suffered a strong hit in the head that produced a deep gash that bled profusely, reasons why he had to stay all night at the hospital in observation.

"The helmet saved my life," said the rider from the hospital. "I've lost a lot of blood and probably I will have to stay a few days in the hospital under observation. Now I can only think about resting, recovering and going back to the bike as soon as possible.

Mate remained conscious the entire time and despite the deep injury, he didn't suffer any fractures. The crash happened just days before the start of the Vuelta a España, the race the rider had set as his main objective for the season.
