Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Elia Viviani has taken the victory of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic after avoiding a crash that happened with two kilometres to go.

The 169-kilometre race had a different route from previous years with five ascents of Box Hill that had the potential of a new outcome. The escape of the race was formed by Alex Dowsett (Katusha-Alpecin), Pascal Eenkhoorn (Jumbo-Visma) and Stan Dewulf (Lotto Soudal) and took an advantage of more than three minutes over the peloton.

As the climbs passed and the peloton got thinner, the front trio also disintegrated until only Dewulf remained. The Belgian rider was caught with 14 kilometres to go and the peloton organised itself to face a bunch sprint.

Just short of the last kilometre, there was a crash in the peloton that affected riders of Bora-hansgrohe, Israel Cycling Academy and Katusha-Alpecin, among others. The rest of the pack kept going to face the final metres and Deceuninck-Quick-Step did a good job for Elia Viviani, who finished perfectly and crossed the line ahead of Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) and his teammate Michael Morkov.

Trek-Segafredo's Jasper Stuyven and Jumbo-Visma's Amund Grondahl Jansen completed the top-five of the day.
