Belgian rider Bjorg Lambrecht of Lotto Soudal has passed away after a crash in the Tour de Pologne.

Lambrecht, just 22 years of age, reportedly crashed against a concrete column and received CPR on the spot before being rushed to a hospital in the city of Rybnik. This is where the rider was confirmed to have died.

The news was also confirmed by his team: "The biggest tragedy possible that could happen to the family, friends and teammates of Bjorg has happened… Rest in peace Bjorg…"

Lambrecht, who rode for Lotto Soudal's U23 team before joining the senior formation last season, was widely seen as a talented promise for the future.

He won Liege-Bastogne-Liege Espoirs while riding for the U23 team in 2017, by which time he had already secured victories in the Belgian National Junior Championships, the Tour de l'Isard and the GP Priessnitz Spa.

In 2018, he finished second at the UCI Road World U23 Championships as well as the Tour des Fjords, where he won the Youth classification and a stage.

The current season showed particularly promising results for Lambrecht, with a first place in the Young rider classification of the Criterium du Dauphine, a fourth position at La Fleche Wallonne, fifth place at the Brabantse Pijl and sixth place at the Amstel Gold Race.

CyclingPub wishes Bjorg's family and friends as well as his teammates and staff at Lotto Soudal much strength in these dark moments.
