Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Elia Viviani has taken the victory at the European Championships road race. The rider crossed the finish line ahead of Yves Lampaert.

The Elite Men road race of the European Championships was 172.6 kilometres long with a start and finish in Alkmaar, the Netherlands. The race started at a very hard pace with Italy setting a very high rhythm to make a selection that would eventually help its sprinter, Elia Viviani.

This pace caused a break in the peloton that left behind fast men like Dylan Groenewegen, Mark Cavendish and Arnaud Demare. The Netherlands and Norway started working together in the pack to try to catch the escapees but with 25 kilometres to go, Elia Viviani (Italy), Yves Lampaert (Belgium) and Pascal Ackermann (Germany) were left in front and their respective teammates obstructed the pace of the reduced peloton to give them a bigger advantage.

The trio arrived together to the last kilometres and it was Yves Lampaert, who made a move with two kilometres to go, to leave Ackermann behind. Viviani and the Belgian faced the last metres together and although Lampaert tried to accelerate at the last moment, the Italian's sprint was very strong and gave him the victory.

For Viviani, this win comes one week after winning the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic and after taking one stage in the Tour de France. Ackermann completed the podium of the day.
