Bahrain-Merida's Domenico Pozzovivo has been hit by a car during training in Italy, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports.

The 36-year-old was training for the upcoming Vuelta a España in Cosenza, Italy when he was hit by a Fiat Punto. The Italian newspaper reports that the rider suffered fractures in six ribs leading to a pneumothorax, as well as fractures of the ulna and the radius of the right arm, and in the left tibia and fibula.

Pozzovivo just finished the Tour of Poland and was preparing his next appointment, the Vuelta a España, which he will now have to skip. The newspaper also commented that the rider was conscious the whole time and that he will undergo surgery later on the day.

The Italian was riding along the road that leads to Laurignano when he was hit by the car at the intersection with the road that leads to Mendicino. The driver of the car called the emergency services and Pozzovivo was taken by ambulance to the Civil Hospital of the Annunciation, where the examinations took place.
