Irish National Champion Sam Bennett (Bora-hansgrohe) has done a hat-trick at the BinckBank Tour by taking the victory of the third stage.

The third day of competition in the Dutch-Belgian race was another chance for the sprinters with a 166.9-kilometre route divided in laps around the town of Aalter in East Flanders. It was an emotional day as the peloton went by Knesselare, the town of the Lotto-Soudal rider Bjorg Lambrecht, who tragically died at the Tour of Poland.

There were two breakaways during the stage: one that was caught with 70 kilometres to go and another one that was reeled back in at the last five kilometres. Sam Bennett once again stayed at the wheel of Dylan Groenewegen (Jumbo-Visma) and launched a sprint in the last metres to cross the line ahead of the Dutchman, a victory that had to be checked by photo finish.

UAE-Team Emirates' Jasper Philipsen, Movistar's Jürgen Roelandts and Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Florian Senechal completed the top-five of the day. Bennett keeps the lead of the General Classification for another day.

"At first, I was not sure if I had actually taken the win or not," the Irish champion said. "It was a very close finish. It came down to a very chaotic finale. I'm really happy to have done the hattrick here, and I'm incredibly proud to represent Ireland with the national champion's kit as well.

"It took a fair bit of energy to stay up the front in the race today and keep myself out of difficulties, and so it's fantastic to be able to have taken three wins in a row."
