Astana has taken the victory at the team time trial of the opening stage at the Vuelta a España and Miguel Angel Lopez climbed to the podium as the first leader of the General Classification.
The Spanish grand tour opened with a 13.4-kilometre team time trial between the Salinas de Torrevieja and Torrevieja over a escenic route. The stage was marred by several crashes, including one of team Jumbo-Visma, which left several of its members on the ground and made them lose 40 seconds on Astana.
This crash also caused that Deceuninck-Quick-Step was held up by Jumbo-Visma's car when it was headed for a stage victory. Other riders like Fabio Aru (UAE-Team Emirates) also hit the ground.
Miguel Angel Lopez was the first rider of Astana to cross the finish line and he took the first Red Jersey of the 2019 edition of the race.
