Movistar Team's Nairo Quintana has taken the victory of the second stage at the Vuelta a España while Sunweb's Nicolas Roche took the leader's jersey.
The second stage of the Spanish race took the riders between Benidorm and Calpe on the Costa Blanca over a 199.6-kilometre hilly route. Sander Armee, Angel Madrazo, Jonathan Lastra and Willie Smit formed the escape of the day and took a gap of more than seven minutes over the peloton.
Teams like Bora-hansgrohe, Movistar and Jumbo-Visma took the lead of the pack to control the escape and could finally catch them with around 30 kilometres to go. With 20 kilometres to go and at the last climb of the day, six riders attacked: Nairo Quintana, Rigoberto Uran, Mikel Nieve, Primoz Roglic, Nicolas Roche and Fabio Aru.
The group stayed together until Quintana attacked with three kilometres to go and nobody followed. The Colombian crossed the finish line five minutes before the rest and this was enough for Nicolas Roche to take the lead of the General Classification, as Miguel Angel Lopez lost 37 seconds at the finish line.
Quintana is second in the GC at two seconds from Roche and Urán at eight seconds.
