Jumbo-Visma's Primoz Roglic has climbed to the second position of the General Classification of the Vuelta a España after the first mountain finish of the race.

The Slovenian stayed with the peloton for most of the stage and his teammates set the pace and kept him protected until the last climb of the day. The rider managed to remain in the group of the favourites and when Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) changed the pace, he stayed at his wheel while the others were dropped.

Roglic faced the last two kilometres with Valverde maintaining a good pace and crossed the finish line in the sixth position, climbing four spots in the overall classification of the Spanish grand tour. "I am happy with how I rode today," the rider said.

"Fortunately I got through the first few days well. The whole team was very strong. When Valverde went and dropped Quintana, I was able to follow. We know how strong he is. He has already proven that in the past. When he won this race ten years ago, I was still a ski jumper."
