Movistar Team's Nairo Quintana has explained that the formation has decided that Alejandro Valverde will be the leader for the remainder of the Vuelta a España.

At the end of the sixth stage of the Spanish grand tour, the Colombian rider -who is currently in the fifth position of the General Classification- explained to the media that Movistar has decided that the World Champion will be its leader to fight for the overall win of the Spanish race.

"The team has decided that Valverde is the leader," said Quintana to the microphones of media from several countries. "Eusebio Unzue (General Manager) got us together and said that Alejandro will be the leader."

These words come one day after that Valverde launched an attack at the end of the fifth stage of the race that managed to leave Quintana struggling behind while taking with him another of the favourites for the overall title: Primoz Roglic. This move made the public wonder about the position of Quintana in the formation.

"I haven't given up on fighting for the title," said Quintana. "I will go day by day because I can feel that the Tour (de France) was very heavy for me and I want to recover. The leader is Valverde and I will be freer. This is the decision we took as a team."

Valverde is currently in the seventh position of the General Classification, at one minute and 28 seconds from the wearer of the Red Jersey Dylan Teuns and five seconds behind Quintana.
