Bora-hansgrohe's Pascal Ackermann has taken the victory of the first stage at the Deutschland Tour and claimed the leader's jersey at the end of the day.

The 2019 edition of the German race marks the 30th anniversary of the opening of the former inner border with a route that goes through the centre of the country. The opening stage was 167-kilometres long from Hannover to Halberstadt and had an escape of four riders, while teams like Bora-hansgrohe took the lead of the pack to force a final sprint.

The escapees were reeled back in after the 30-kilometre mark and with 10 kilometres to go there were some attempts of an escape, but the peloton repealed it successfully. It all came down to a bunch sprint in which Bora-hansgrohe did an outstanding job for Pascal Ackermann, who finish it perfectly crossing the line ahead of Alexander Kristoff and Simone Consonni (UAE-Team Emirates).

"Everything went well today," said the German rider. "There is really an incredible atmosphere here at the Deutschland Tour, which is very motivating. After the race in Hamburg, I was a bit at a loss, as I couldn't quite explain the result, but today everything went much better.

"I have been training with the team here and it made a big difference. I had good legs today and am happy to have won here and also take the red leader's jersey. We have reached our goal and we will see what is possible in the next few days."
