Team Sunweb's Nikias Arndt has sprinted to victory in the eighth stage of the Vuelta a España on a day that the breakaway managed to survive. Cofidis' Nicolas Edet climbed to the top of the General Classification.

The eighth stage of the race took the riders through a 166.9-kilometre course between the Spanish cities of Valls and Igualada and had a favourable profile for the breakaway. A group of 21 riders formed the escape of the day and included names like Tobias Ludvigsson, Tosh Van Der Sande, David de la Cruz, Nikias Arndt, Nicolas Edet and Martijn Tusveld, among others.

Heavy rain fell on the riders in the second half of the stage, which made things trickier and more dangerous. At the climb of the day, Peter Stetina (Trek-Segafredo) made a move from the front group and was followed by Fernando Barceló (Euskadi Murias), but Jesús Herrada (Cofidis) managed to bring the chasers back to the front.

On the descent, Ruben Guerreiro, Tusveld and Barcelo launched a new attack and were later joined by Aranburu. With around three kilometres to go and as the chasers made contact with the front men, Tusveld crashed on a roundabout while the others continue to face a reduced sprint in which Arndt showed to be the fastest man by crossing the line ahead of Aranburu and Van der Sande.

Edet crossed the finish line in the eleventh position with the front group and this was enough for him to wear the Red Jersey at the end of the stage.
