Lotto-Soudal's Maxime Monfort has announced his retirement from professional cycling at the end of the 2019 season.
The 36-year-old turned professional in 2004 with Landbouwkrediet-Colnago. From there he took a step up to the WorldTour with Cofidis and he worked with Team Columbia-HTC and the team that is currently known as Trek-Segafredo before signing for Lotto Soudal in 2014.
"It is not without emotion that I am announcing the end of my professional cycling career," announced Monfort through social media. "It was a difficult decision but at the same time the best I could make. I have experienced an intense 2019 season in which I have had great moments as a teammate, including the Tour (de France). I have decided to stop at a peak. I could have done an extra season, but I am convinced that the moment has come to stop.
The rider hopes to remain working in the cycling world. "I have advanced conversations about new professional projects and I look forward to that. I hope to be able to tell more about it soon, but it is my wish to remain in the world of cycling."
The last race for Monfort will be the Famenne Ardenne Classic on October 6.
