Mitchelton-Scott's Luka Mezgec was the only rider involved in the last-kilometre crash at the 14th stage of the Vuelta a España that had to retire from the race due to the injuries.

The peloton was getting ready for the final sprint when a massive crash affected the peloton, holding back the General Classification riders. Sam Bennett took the victory of the stage while Mezgec was the rider that suffered the worst consequences and had to be taken by ambulance right away, which forced him to abandon the grand tour.

"Luka has fractured the iliac crest on his right hip," said Mitchelton-Scott's doctor Matteo Beltemacchi. "Thankfully he has avoided damage on the joint so it’s not considered a bad fracture.

"He will not need surgery but will need to spend a period of time laying down, normally between one and three weeks depending on the speed of his recovery. He will not be required to spend this period in hospital, so we will transfer him home via ambulance."
