Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates) got closer to the second place in the General Classification of the Vuelta a España after he won some seconds on Alejandro Valverde.
The Slovenian was part of the favourites' group up until the last climb and when Miguel Ángel López attacked, he defended himself successfully, always staying at the wheel of the Colombian. The movements of both riders managed to drop the World Champion and they and Primoz Roglic crossed the finish line, while Valverde finished 24 seconds behind.
Pogacar is now only 54 seconds behind the Spaniard in the overall standings of the Spanish grand tour. "Today was a tough day, above all in the finale when Lopez attacked me several times," said the Slovenian. "I gave everything I had to follow him and it went well at the end. It will be a really exciting duel until the last day.
"Today was also a good day because I gained some time on Valverde, and also maintained my advantage on Lopez. I’m tired, I think like everyone, in the morning and after the stage, but I continue to feel good during the race. I hope to be at the top in the last week too."
