Jumbo-Visma's Dylan Groenewegen has done a hat-trick by taking the victory of the fifth stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain.

The 174.1-kilometre stage with a start and finish in Birkenhead finished in a bunch sprint in which the Dutchman proved once again to have the better legs. He crossed the finish line ahead of Matthew Walls (Great Britain) and Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott).

"I am very happy with my third stage win," said Groenewegen. "This was a really good team performance and a great lead-out. However, compared to the previous days I didn't have the best feeling. We had the stage under control and Koen did a lot of work in the chase.

"On the final climb, we were not in an entirely ideal position. Thanks to Jos, we were back at the front at the right moment, after which Amund and Mike started a fantastic sprint. This victory is not only good for my morale, but also for the team."

With his third place of the day, Trentin climbed back up to the lead of the General Classification and has an advantage of three seconds over Mathieu van der Poel (Corendon Circus). "It was finally a kind of easy day even if it’s not as easy as it looks on television," explained the Italian.

"But I think it just gives the guys a little bit of a relax today and try to focus on your sprint and it came out pretty good, I knew that I had to come from the back, to be honest, I was a little bit too much but Groenewegen here just demonstrated once again that he’s one step above all the rest and I thought I had a good race and take bonus seconds to be back in the general classification lead."
