WNT-Rotor's Lisa Brennauer took the victory of the first stage of the Madrid Challenge by La Vuelta.

This is the second year that the women's race of the Vuelta a España is a stage competition and it once more kicked off with an individual time trial. The fight against the clock took place on a 9.3-kilometre course in Boadilla del Monte, just like last year when Ellen van Dijk took the overall victory.

Brennauer showed once more her time trial talents that made her the World Champion of the discipline in 2014 by stopping the clock in 12 minutes and 52 seconds. The German rider was four seconds faster than Team Sunweb's Lucinda Brand and 13 seconds faster than Danish rider Pernille Mathiesen.

The times at the end of the individual time trial left the competition open for the second stage, the race in the circuit of Madrid that will take the riders through the centre of the Spanish capital in the same route that the men will tackle hours later. Bonus seconds can play a crucial role in deciding who will be the fifth champion of the Spanish World Tour race.
