Wout Poels has confirmed his move to Bahrain-Merida from Team Ineos with a two-year contract.

The winner of the 2016 Liege-Bastogne-Liege is set to move to the Emirati team with the objective of strengthening its roster for Grand Tours and the spring Classics. The Dutchman was convinced by Rod Ellingworth, who worked with him in Sky and since April is working with Bahrain-Merida, to join the team for the next two years.

"He was the person that convinced me to ride for this team," said Poels to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. "I look forward to this new challenge, where new opportunities lie ahead."

The rider arrives to the team very likely to support Mikel Landa at the Tour de France and will possibly take a more prominent role at the Giro d'Italia or the Vuelta a España. The Dutchman could also possibly get a leadership role in the spring classics while in other one-day races he would share the captaincy with Dylan Teuns.

Poels arrived to team Sky in 2015 from Omega Pharma-Quick-Step and has a palmares that includes the win in Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, as well as stage victories in races like the Tour of Britain, Tirreno-Adriatico, the Criterium du Dauphine, the Tour de Pologne and Paris-Nice, among others.
